Airways Alert 2nd Quarter 2000

I would like to take this time to welcome all of the new
members that have joined the Fresno Airways Men's Club
during these past few weeks.  If you are a new member and
do not know other members, you can still sign up for some
of the tournaments and we can place you with someone that
is a compatible-playing partner.  Most of the tournaments
you may choose your own partner or team; however, there
are some that will be computer drawn.

As most of you are aware, there was an article in the
Fresno Bee concerning a new golf course that would be
built adjacent to Clovis Avenue, that is just a proposal
as of now.  The Board of Directors met recently with Mr.
Dan Card, Airport Development Manager, and he stated that
this wouldn't take place in the immediate future.  If the
proposal is approved for the construction of the new golf
course, we, the Board of Directors will be notified prior
to and in ample time, of this situation.  The new golf
course will be constructed before the closing of the
Airways Golf Course.  This will probably not take place
for at least 5 to 10 years if ever.  You know how
politicians work.

Bill LaMontagne
President
From the Tournament Chairman

The participation of the last 3 tournaments has been
exceptional as they were in the previous 3 tournaments.
In this newsletter, there will be the remaining
tournament schedule.  This is mainly for all of the new
members.  Our tournament schedule is also posted at the
clubhouse.  Please do not place score cards in the drop
box after posting scores on the computer.  Please
remember that it is the responsibility of the member to
post each round of golf at the competition of play.  The
only exception is that tournament scores are posted by
tournament committee and not by the member.  All members
may play in any tournament, including the 2 tournaments
listed below and be eligible for the prize money, no
matter how many tournaments you have played.  You must
play in at least 3 tournaments in the previous 12 months
to be able to qualify and represent the men's club for
the Club Championship and the 2 man Spyglass Tournament.

The following is the results for the last 3 tournament:

Rules of the Game:

Rule 5-3.  Ball Unfit for Play

A ball is unfit for play if it is visibly cut,
cracked or out of shape.  A ball is not unfit for play
solely because mud or other materials adhere to it, its
surface is scratched or scraped or its paint is damaged
or discolored.
If a player has reason to believe his ball has
become unfit or play during the play of the hole being
played, he may during the play of such hole lift his ball
without penalty to determine whether it is unfit.
Before lifting the ball, the player must announce his
intention to his opponent in match play or his marker or
a fellow-competitor in stroke play and mark the position
of the ball without cleaning it and must give his
opponent, marker or fellow-competitor an opportunity to
examine the ball.
If he fails to comply with this procedure, he shall
incur a penalty of one stroke.  If it is determined that
the ball has become unfit for play during play of the
hole being played, the player may substitute another
ball, placing it on the spot where the original ball lay.
Otherwise, the original ball shall be replaced.

Rule 25-1 Casual Water, Ground Under Repair and Certain
Damage to Course

a. Interference by casual water, ground under repair or a
hole, cast or runway made by a burrowing animal, a
reptile or a bird occurs when a ball lies in or touches
any of these conditions or when such a condition on the
course interferes with the player's stance or the area of
his intended swing.  If interference exist, the player
may either play the ball as it lies (unless prohibited by
Local Rule) or take relief as provided in Clause b.

b. Relief

If the player elects to take relief, he shall proceed as
follows: (i) Through the Green: If the ball lies through
the green, the point on the course nearest to where the
ball lies shall be determined which (a) is not nearer the
hole, (b) avoids interference by the condition, and (c)
is not in a hazard or on a putting green.  The player
shall lift the ball and drop it without penalty within
one club-length of the point thus determined on a part of
the course which fulfills (a), (b) and (c) above.

Editorial:

Repairing ball marks on greens.  It has been explained to
me that the proper way to repair a ball mark is to take
the high side of the ball mark and push it back into the
mark.  Then push both sides into the mark.  Then take
your putter and tamp down the whole are.  The thing to
remember is don't twist the repair tool while repairing
the mark.  This can damage the roots and extend the
recovery process.  I believe there are two things that
each of us as members should accomplish while playing on
our home course.  One, repair are own ball marks and one
additional one.  Two, if you see someone not repairing
their marks is to remind them.  The conditions of our
greens are the best they have been in some time and this
little extra work can only help preserve them during the
course of the year.  As always, we are willing to include
any information that is important to the membership and
would encourage all of our members to add to the
newsletter.  Any suggestions can be dropped in the lock
box on top of the computer cabinet.
